Mom's Jury Doody

My mom is 77 and has Alzheimer’s. She received a Jury Summons yesterday and I couldn’t resist this. But before I hear any whining about mother bashing be advised that despite her affliction, her sense of humor is every bit as warped as mine.

Poem Artwork

The summons arrived by U.S. mail

Oozing legal efflorescence

The Superior Court of California

Seeks the honor of your presence

We’ll provide the opportunity

For some schmuck despite his fears

To let him have his day in court

Before a jury of his peers

I suppressed a little chuckle

And then I laughed out loud

I considered for a moment

What the system has allowed

There is a box that you can check

If your memory’s not sufficient

Or to ask the court for an excuse

If you’re mentally deficient

Mom wouldn’t know to check that box

Despite the form’s intent

I wondered just how many folks

Have been seated with malcontent

I assisted her to complete the form

Asking for a medical excuse

But there’s another million out there

Which begs the question what’s the use?

I suspect the jury pool is full

Of folks dumb not like a fox

And I’d hate to think it might be true

She’d be the bright bulb in the box

So this problem has to swing full circle

To support the system I agree

God forbid possibly someday

That poor schmuck might be me

My mother is 88, and she gets those things in the mail, all the time. I'd love to serve on a jury, but I never get one - most interesting.

A WELL DONE WORK THAT BRINGS ATTENTION TO AN OCCURRENCE WHICH COULD VERY WELL HAPPEN. YOUR RHYME SCHEME IS GREAT, WITH THE THEME SOLIDLY SUPPORTED. ENJOYED AND THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE,

Hysterical about the box, isn't it? I think this is great, Patrick. Without humor, where would we be? Rhyme's cool, too.

Thought the system had missed me, but I got summoned for jury duty several months ago. Case ended up thrown out of court, and I was
so relieved. Supposed to be it. H o p e . so.

Hi to your mom. She sounds like a hoot.

Keep Smilin'!

Too rich! I think the requirement is that you have a pulse, lol. But a "warped" sense of humor would certainly help(the juror, that is)...

"Poor schmuck might be me." Very well written very funny but so true that it puts our jury selection system to shame.

Ah, some phrases resonate. . . such as motherload from George. Maybe I have a different connotation of the word in mind though. Good one, and it was funny. (George, you too)

Well Patrick, after hearing you I imagine that your mother can't have less humor, after all she's the Motherload where you come from.
The brightest bulb in that chandelier that maybe one day can illuminate you? hope not! (LOL)
