See San Francisco Airport on just $800 a day!

I had to go to San Francisco on Friday for a business trip. The round trip coach class airfare from Burbank was $714. That works out to about $1.20 per mile. It’s the boss's money but Lordy that’s expensive

Poem Artwork

Go north young man

The boss did say

To an outreach workshop

For just half the day

So I get up at five

And then catch my plane

Frisco is foggy

But at least there’s no rain

A regional air jet

How could I know

They’d send half of us fat boys

To sit in the back row

To balance the aircraft

The pilot tried to explain

I need less weigh on the nose

Or I can’t fly this plane

Out on the tarmac

For about half an hour

While the traffic controllers

For our route they did scour

Landed in Frisco and

Then caught a cab

Forty dollars for ten miles

My driver did nab

The workshop was painless

We were completed by noon

An early Friday departure

My favorite tune

Security’s a nightmare

And I’m under the gun

I’ve got a great chance

To catch the flight leaving at one

I arrive at the gate

But the agent is shifty

I can get you on standby

For a mere extra fifty

I just shake my head

And respectfully decline

I’ll wait until four

And just stare at the line

A ten dollar sandwich

And an eight dollar beer

I listen with amusement

As the announcement I hear

The one o’clock’s been delayed

Until two forty five

Sixteen more dollars

Help me survive

We get on my aircraft

Precisely at four

It’s never a good sign

When they don’t shut the door

They roust us back out

Into terminal two

Departure’s delayed

They can’t find our crew

From Fresno the pilot

Arrives but there’s doubt

The toilet is broken

And they must yank it out

The next flight’s at 6:10

But the seats are all sold

The joy of air travel

Is getting remarkably old

Sixteen more dollars

Provide temporary relief

Then a miracle happens

To my sincere disbelief

A co-worker spies me

United status 1K

He consults with an agent

And we’re suddenly away

I must have bumped someone

And that hardly seems fair

One of a hundred more reasons

Not to travel by air

This was so brilliantly entertaining to read Patrick! Laughed all the way through as I related it to so many airport encounters.

And people wonder why I don't fly...I drive, it may take longer but I can stop when I want, eat when I want, not spend an arm and a leg and be in the relative comfort of my car though I may spend the same money from buying gas...;-)e

I hear ya, Patrick! Flying anywhere is getting to be a lot more bother than its worth!

You've really made me glad that I no longer have to fly anywhere - what a nightmare it always was, and from all reports it's so much worse, today.

Very well done, Patrick. You have just reminded me of how fortunate I am not to have to travel by air very often at all. Thank you. Love and peace,

Regis

This is so funny, and you have the greatest talent for story-telling poetry!
I carry my cello with me and they usually roll eyes and bump me up to first class when I stomp my foot and say no I WILL NOT put it in baggage.
Take Care!,

Why I don't fly. Back in the day, 1968, you could fly one way, hassle-free for $35 . Silicon Valley and 9/11 changed all that. Soon, you'll be able to take the train for bigger bucks.

The $8 beers will keep the best of us sober. This is why I hate flying. I enjoyed this. I'm reminded of the pit-falls ahead.

I certainly enjoyed this one. You descirbed the pain of flying with just the right amount of humor to stop the flow of 4-letter words. :)
