Citrus Peek-a-Boo

I caught this image of a swallowtail butterfly on my back porch. My pesky terrier chased it up into the orange tree from my photo op in the flowers. It turned out ok though. Note the tail coloration and the “false eye” it uses to avoid predators, like pesky terriers.

Peek-a boo madam butterfly

I really like your eye shadow

And your clever horns

Designed to deny

Even the most discerning appetite

Antennae front and rear

Well sort of

Mother Nature is so smart

Function and beauty

In a delicate package

Of slow motion rainbows

Nature is all function, and sometimes creates the most beautiful creatures in its niches of survival. Unfortunately, I can't see the eye in this picture. But I know what swallowtail when I see one and this one is a beauty–worth a poem.
