There was a time when night was night,
When no unnatural light claimed any right.
A time when darkness extinguished all light,
Leaving behind only the residue of starlight.
Daylight gathered its skirts to flee in flight,
To enter the nether-land of the coming night.
The color black dominates over light’s white,
Thin layers of darkness wishing to be bright.
Not just the ebony layer of everlasting night,
Layers of shadow suggesting ghostly fright.
Imagine the sheer dread of coming twilight,
Earth’s shutters slowly drawn to create night.
A stalking cat, darkness crawls from height,
To settle over half the earth as if in spite.
The moment passes, taking the last light,
And carrying it into the darkness of night.
In return, night’s darkness offers insight,
With day left behind, it has its own delight.
Nothing compares to the hour of midnight,
When darkness is betrayed by moonlight.
darkness is also betrayed at midnight due to the daylight's starting to grow up that hour to reach its fullness at noon. Then night takes over the reins to proceed smoothly to erotic foreplay with its partner ;)) A good rhythmic piece. . . enjoyed the dynamics of changes in each word and line. Cheers, alex
Few experience total darkness anymore. But like you have written, there wasn't time before unnatural light, even before candles and campfires, when the night became a time of extreme danger and fear for those that did not have night vision.
Fortunately, we do have a bit of night vision that picks up from the moon and stars. It's no wonder that early people worshiped the moon and get phases. A poem that reminds us of how we have changed the natural world. The satellite view of earth at night proves how much we have changed our natural world.
