Such beauty is usually only reserved for summer, glad I am I got to see it in winter...

I saw today a cardinal… Cold as it was, Below zero with the wind, I saw a beautiful reminder of spring, In a striking red cardinal from limb to limb flittering… A back drop of winter, The trees without leaves, Gray skies awaiting snow, Grass green but winter dead… She stopped and looked directly at me, She sat there for a minute taking me in, I did the same to her, I felt it surely a sin, This beautiful bird out in the cold, Fending for its young, seeking food so bold… She flew away pretty fast, Had her own life to lead, She was there for only an instant, I did stand there and enjoyed her presence, She made me remember summer for but a second, For that I am truly in her debt, I will look for her daily; you can on that, bet… © ed ~ 1/18/05

Cardinals are one of the few birds to thrive in winter. I love their song, and what a pleasure to look at. Glad you had the opportunity.

Cardinals seem to hold a special place in many nature lovers' hearts. Even though I see one daily feeding off the seed mix our macaw discards, it's still a delight to glimpse him. Nice tribute!

they are pretty any time of the year, but especially so in winter, when there is a lot of snow; a bright flash of red to cheer up any drab or snowy landscape! they are my favorite bird; and it's not just coz i am originally from ohio! nice write, eddie!

A cardinal built it's nest in the bird house we put up. We have several sets of cardinals and they are the state bird of Virginia. Others too.

The female is beautiful, with her tawny breast and red bill.
We have two pairs, all winter, on the feeder.
They cheer me no end.

The bright red cardinal is truly a blessed sight in winter's cold. And these beauties don't migrate, Ed. She probably has a mate very nearby. If you want to see her again, put out some sunflower seeds, and she and her hubby will soon visit again. They might even bring their little babies when they are born this spring.
