Not so very far from the beach,
Where this whale did breach,
Chasing krill, trying to get out of its reach,
Showing its young, almost as we of our children teach…
Dolphins too come in so very close,
To the bathers in summer, the view is the most,
They frolic off shore but yards it seems away,
This they do each and every day…
What the swimmers don’t realize,
Is that sharks of all types intermingle,
With humans while they play,
Sometimes the sharks have company,
And sometimes they are amongst us, single…
I truly enjoyed this poem. I like how it made me feel that I was on the shore somewhere. I could smell the sea brine, hear the gulls cry and the children laugh...and the lifeguard frantically blowing his whistle and yelling "Shark!"
And as we continue to over-fish our oceans, destroying their food sources, we greedy humans will now increasingly become their prey - can't say I blame them either. One of the reasons that I prefer to swim in fresh water lakes, and not in our dying oceans.
You could start a whole TV series called "Shark Invaders." Throughout history and before, beaches were places where hunters sought their prey. It is only recently that we've had the leisure time and inclination to swim at the beach.
Your poem is as much, "swimmer beware," as an ode to the shark.
