Today marks the beginning of Spring season and is called Basant Panchimi. It is a very auspicious day marked by celebrations. People wear yellow clothes and welcome spring. It is also the feast of Goddess Sarasvati who is the daughter of Lord Shiva and Goddess Durga. Hindus offer prayers to this Goddess Sarasvati as she is believed to have endowed human beings the ability of language, wisdom, knowledge, learning, all art forms as well as music. Many centres of learning and art centres perform rituals of prayers to offer to this deity on this day.
In my poem I wish to welcome the Spring season and its hues for the bounty of natural yields of mother nature during this time.

Poem Artwork

The alluring  mustard fields in Spring

Another new month greeted   green fields afresh

Fine rays of the sun filter through golden yields

Seeping through veins of leaves  waving in the air

Tender spinach rich, bright and green exude

Gracefully stand to be picked and savoured

The fullness of aubergines

Swelling  purple delights

Tomatoes shining striking red

Peer out from bushes small

The slithering lengths of snake gourds,

Display its prowess to crawl

 Rotund rounded  yellow pumpkins

Sit blinking in the field  from vines

Sweet peas like pearls in oyster shell covers

Bursting full  pods dangle in  air

The sweet corn  cobs akin  yellow sapphires

 Absorbing  colours from the sun

Mustard flower clusters in yellow beds glitter

The coloured fields reaching  far and wide,

 Miles and miles across

Like pecks of  flame arising

In  the green lands appear

Butterflies hasten to have its share

Of a season celebrating vibrant colours

Yellow, for renewal, love and hope

Along with rich pink hues in sky

The accomplishment   of  song and dance

For a joyous setting of a fine mood

The earth’s bountiful  offer of  full blooms

For the splendid Spring season   is here

Beautiful, sweet friend. Your descriptions make it easy to see. I particularly love the last two lines.

A fabulous informative and beautiful poem. I had always thought yellow meant true love in a rose. Maybe that is from the Victorian age. I liked the yellow in this!

Spring starts early in India. Your verses tell of its splendor. I have heard that India has started to reject genetically modified seeds because they have caused many problems for farmers, many of who have committed suicide over crop failure. I sure hope that where you are big corporations haven't made your spring somewhat sour.

You have painted a magnificent, full and rich description of Earth's extraordinary bounty, and you have lifted my spirits enormously with your words! Thank you!
Here in Uk the sun is giving us a taste of what is to come, and I cannot wait...
