Oh Louisiana!

The Houston metropolitan area of about 5 million people narrowly missed being hit by a disaster that would have overshadowed the terrible flood from hurricane Harvey. Having witnessed the eye of Alisha passing over my home in the morning after a terrifying night and the destruction I witnessed after, I hope the people of Louisiana can restore their homes and livelihood after such an economic and life-threatening event that Laura has brought to the entire state while largely saving Baton Rouge and New Orleans this time.

Oh Louisiana!

Laura has come and Laura has gone,

in the night, they left in a throng,

how many stayed back is still unknown,

but she freaked those who stayed,

with her shrieking, howling song.

For those who do not know what it's like,

to have your whole world coming apart,

your household flying, ripping and groaning,

in the pitch dark, tearing at your heart.

It goes on forever, like it will never end,

waiting for the dawn and the wind to subside.

Hoping you'll be alive to see it come,

hoping you won't lose those by your side.

And then it is calm and Laura has left,

a trail of destruction of biblical scale,

leaving perhaps behind Katrina's toll,

death and destruction, too, pale.

While many humans escaped with their lives,

the wildlife of Louisiana had no escape,

leaving alligators with a feast to engorge

they died by the millions from Laura's rape.

The fickle fate of the weather,

can only be studied and charted,

we can't control it anymore than,

who will live or be departed.

There are but good fortune,

have we missed a bullet again.

But what will happen next time,

the who, where and when?

SAD, INDEED...IT SEEMS THAT AGAIN LOUISIANA MUST 'RECOVER' THOUGH THANK GOD LAURA WASN'T AS DEVASTATING AS KATRINA, AS THEY WERE MORE PREPARED. AND NOW WE ALSO LOOK TO PARTS OF CALIFORNIA, OREGON AND WASHINGTON...MY, MY, THE FIRES! AND AGAIN WE SEE THESE NATURAL DISASTERS ARE NOT AT ALL NEW TO THESE AREAS, YET WE 'FEEL' FOR THOSE WHO HAVE LOSS EVERYTHING INCLUDING KINDRED, NEIGHBORS AND FRIENDS. THROUGH TEARS, IT IS HARD TO LOOK UP AND CALL ON OUR ONLY HELP...ALMIGHTY GOD. BUT THAT IS WHERE THE STRENGTH TO GO ON WILL COME FROM. I WAS GLAD TO HEAR A WOMAN SAY...THROUGH IT ALL, SHE WAS GRATEFUL THAT ALL HER FAMILY HAD MADE IT OUT ALIVE. THESE ARE TIMES WHEN OUR FAITH IS SORE TESTED AND WE MUST STAY PRAYERFUL IN SPITE OF WHAT IS GOING ON. THUS, LOOKING AS 'DISASTERS' FROM ANOTHER ASPECT...WITH NOVEMBER ALMOST UPON US...I MUST SAY, 'OH AMERICA!' THANKS FOR SHARING, RON. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Such an à propos poem, Ron. You are right, not having experienced such a tragic weather event, I can only imagine the terror such an event would bring. Well done. Thank you for sharing. Love and peace to you,

Regis. 🍁

A thoughtful appraisal of "what if" reverse-engineered in places, and foretelling the inevitable in others. It's so easy to forget the animal casualties of hurricanes and the wildfires of California. Thanks for posting a reminder that aside from Washington, there is plenty to stay alert to.

This is a sobering reflection of your personal experience and empathy. Well done.

As well evidenced here, Mother Nature is not always kind. On the contrary, these hurricanes do an incredible amount of damage. Living here now in Miami, I am well wary of them. Great poem.

Seems to me it always hit Louisianna for some geographical reason. A good read poem, but a sad one!

Glad you made it through...well enough to write this poem:) Hang in there, Ron. Weather, like the rest of life, is unpredictable as well as largely uncontrollable. But we keep on keeping on...
Have a blessed weekend.
