A break from the Odes -

Fictional, but may become reality -

Image (c) 2007, Karla Dorman

Poem Artwork

The sky, mean today, blue
pressing down on sunburned
shoulders.  No clouds to hide
behind; no moisture to
slake this thirst ... what I would
give for a cracking storm
full of thunder and rain!
Instead, I'm singing b l u e
in the redness of my
pain:  the crops, dead and gone:
Earth's children, nearly so.
My mouth is desert-dry;
it longs for relief:  I
remember water, once.

(c) 2008, Karla Dorman (4/28)

VEry well done Karla, captures well what people must feel like in these situataions. Living in a Northern climate with plenty of rain we do truly tend to take the luxury of water for granted.

I remember water, once.

And I fear at our rate of consumption today, many will one day say the same.

My grandpa told me that if I go out and come back wet it is raining, but if I come back dry...it is not.
He was a real weather wizard.

Well of course, it is so easy for you to say. Because you are the master of weather poetry and the mother of expressing emotions that are diffuicult to accurately express. You had to write this. Because no one else could do the emotion or the weather condition justice. You have the heart and poetic expertise. Thanks for caring enough to share it with us. Stay safe. And may peace be always with you. Jon Michael Willey

The imagery is painful to contemplate. *ow* LOL The title is clever, too: drought is ROUGH. Combining the two is brilliant! (D.ROUGH.T) Excellent write, very well written, brava!
