It's said that if you see
the lightning and hear the
thunder, it missed you. This
one a bit too close. We've
had a strange year, weather
wise: our severe season
began early, then got
smashed by the Death Ridge of
high pressure. This past week,
storms nearly every
day: the other morning,
rudely jolted awake
by tornado sirens.
Yesterday afternoon,
the bottom dropped out with
heavy rain and spiders
dancing across the sky.
Today, a stepped leader
followed by a bolt in
the parking lot followed
by nearly instant crack
that shook the camera
in my hands and my nerves:
what will tomorrow bring?!? =]
You live in Storm Central!! Amazing photos, and a fascinating weather tale, as always. Did you ever see that charming old X Files about the Weatherman? I always think of you when it (rarely this summer) thunders here--
Karla, you have described one of the unique experiences in life -- the tremendous power of lightening and thunder, the concussive energy wave from lightening -- thunder, rattles the entire body so that we actually can experience feeling our ribs vibrate -- there is no sensation on earth that equals it -- an adrenaline junkies high -- this is great work, poem and photo -- peace and love my friend -- Jon Michael
Karla, I hope you continue to SEE and HEAR the lightning
and thunder. That's some wild weather scene you have out there.
Occasionally, here in South Jersey, we get a lightning show
over the meadowlands that outdoes the July 4th fireworks.

As my family gathered at the local park in preparation for the fireworks on July 4th a severe thunderstorm hit. Everyone ran for shelter. Unfortunately, someone didn't make it and was struck by lightening less than 15 feet from the shelter. He died later that evening. It put a somber mood on the festivities... The forces of nature can be quite scary...

I've been around a few of those instant flash bangs and everytime it scares the ***t out of me. On the bright side you got to hear the thunder as opposed to waking up as a nuked hotdog. Patrick
I know it's been rough Karla, I hope it settles down and the "close" theory means little when the lightning cracks and thunder booms outside your window.
Karla,
I've not experienced anything as dramatic or 'close call' as that except once here in Singapore during a thunder and lightning performance when a bolt struck the beautiful flame tree in the park and absolutely fried it in front of my eyes...rocked me back on my heels.
Stay safe, Sweet Lady.
... your descriptive visuals make me think of enraged celebs shaking their fists at the hoardes of paparazzi, Karla! "No cameras... I said NO CAMERAS!!" Take great care, dear heart, as you Storm Spin and Chase... And Tornado Sirens??? My goodness, nature down your way certainly means business... Stay sage and safe xxx
Karla, glad you explained "spiders" in an earlier submission. Very visually well written. However, as beautiful as a storm may seem, at least to me in Southern California where we hardly ever have lightening, I would surely get tired of it very quickly, certainly along with the humid heat.
Your friend in Southern California, Mark
Fantastic video and poem, Karla; the weather here lately has been crazy, hasn't it?? Glad the stormy period has moved on by, now we have HEAT! *UGHHH* What's worse? Storms or heat? (Right now, I'd pick the storms; cooler temps, for one thing! Just don't need all the other fun stuff! No, ma'am! LOL) At least you've been busy chasing; the storms keep you occupied! LOL Very well penned/illustrated; brava!

Great writing...thunder and lightning can be scarey.....stay safe and well always...Hugss
I don't mind thunder and lightning so long as its in the distance--was it you who said you can count between the thunder and lightning to tell how many miles away it is? Stay safe, Karla.
Days back, heavy rains here too and then...I grabbed my camera because I thought at that moment "Karla would have liked it" and snapped a few shots of a double rainbow, whose western ends were ending near my top flat. Went there to see about the pot of gold, no luck!
I will post the pictures with some words soon.
Watching those storms form is a fascinating sight and can be frightening at times. One of the only things I don't miss about home is the tornadoes. Nice write.
there was a tornado in new jersey few days ago ... tore a few roofs off ...very rare in this area of the northeast ... i certainly empathize with your continuing apprehension ...
Scary I am glad I live in Cali, above the fault line, I can tell you when we were driving over the bay bridge yesterday I was praying remaembering the quake of 89! I'm praying for you, Karen let me know the good news, glad you guys are finally getting some assistance~
