She wakes up in pain, shoulders it
throughout the day, takes him to bed
at night, this partner she'd rather
not be married to: but they're joined
at the spine, have been ever since
she served her nation a long time
ago. She doesn't remember
a day when she didn't hurt. It's
only getting worse, the older
she gets. She honors the wedding
vows, even though he's stolen all
of her dreams, who she could have been.
He breaks her down; she confides in
her cane she deserves better. She
carries on, like a good soldier
would. It does no good to complain.
No one's listening, anyway.
Besides, her injuries happened
in peace-time. If she feels this way,
how are those who lost more than they
should have because of war supposed
to feel? They're lined up at the door,
waiting for answers that are slow
in coming (if they come at all) ...

Yeah, we have a full-fledged pro army president to hear some people tell it / Every administration since this nation was formed has given the vets a dirty deal / This one will be no different no matter wll their posturing . . .

Oh, my goodness, Karla, this is an awesome piece of work. Sometimes in poetry the message is good, but the poem is not; or, the poem is good but there is no clear message. In this piece you have joined the two brilliantly.
They all, the ones that made so much promises to the soldiers wish that the words of General Patton come to true, that soldiers don't die, that they just fade away...
This is an excellent bio write of someone who has served their country and now must pay the consequences from having sustained an injury. You're right, they are lined up at the door waiting for answers that never come. Terrific write, Karla.
