My family in MA and DC are fine, as are friends up and down the Eastern Seaboard. But what a mess for millions more. Please keep those affected by Sandy in your thoughts and prayers.
Hurricane Sandy stretched about 940 miles — greater than the distance from New York to Atlanta.
It was unusual for a storm of such size and strength to move inland so late in the year; they usually head back out to sea. But Sandy was pushed into the mid-Atlantic states and New England because a high-pressure system near Greenland blocked its progress eastward. That shift toward the northwest put Sandy on course to mesh with a cold front which slowed Sandy, changing the hurricane into a nor'easter.
Sandy was hired on; in six
hours, she had made a
name for herself. She was
given her assignment: to
give the meteorologists
fits. That, she did. In one
day, she bossed her way
across Jamaica; in two,
Cuba. Then she focused
her eye on the Eastern
Seaboard: a business trip
to New York sounded good,
with maybe side trips to
Boston and Atlantic City.
She gobbled up prime real
estate and quickly grew
into a monster. Many far
from her path felt the
effects of wind and rain:
she even had a cold side
as she slashed her way
through. She cost the
company billions of dollars,
more than they imagined.
Isn't it time she retired?
No damsel in distress was that wench. A tempest with a nasty demeanor and destruction as her last name. Human lives and property she cared not, taking a toll on both. New Jersey and portions of New York will be years recovering from Sandy's ravaging rain, flooding and winds. A villain in a black hat was she. Karla,I wish you love and peace my dear friend. She was a bitch. But I would say there are more to come. Already the unusual weather we've been having world why drought and the typhoons that hit the Philippines, Vietnam, and Taiwan this year show larger and more violent weather swings.
I think it is becoming clear that carbon in the air both as soot and as carbon dioxide is beginning to affect the weather in the atmosphere in very bad ways. The growing demand in China and India for fossil fuel products is only going to exacerbate the problem. Big oil gas and coal are pouring millions into political campaigns to make sure that progress is slowed on green energy solutions.
As a poet with a bit of technological and engineering background, I want to sound the alarm in many ways by my poems, short stories, and novels. I am confident that we will get through but I don't see any value in digging up all of our fossil fuel resources to become energy independent, crowding to our shorelines for its beauty and economic development, and cutting down trees in the rest of the world so that we can have beautiful furniture and wood furnishings in our homes.
A clever personification, Karla, and thanks for the background as I have been wondering about her chosen path and onward transmission. So good to hear that you and yours are safe and relatively unscathed. Each and every death is one too many, but it could truly have been so much worse in terms of fatalities. But the depressing mess and destruction... well, that in itself is big enough to have to bear. She has truly been one Fat Cat, to keep with your analogy... and a heartbreaking Bitch! xx
It's surely time for scientists to discover a way to influence weather. If they did, it would be warm and sunny in Scotland all year and a wee bit dreich in Jamaica. But seriously it's at time like this we turn to poetry to cope with the disruption, the deaths and the devastation. Stay calm and in our thoughts you all remain.
