have you ever been caught in a Rip Tide?

rip·tide (-tīd′)

noun

a current opposing other currents, producing violently disturbed water; esp., the strong, narrow flow of sea water that rushes seaward after incoming waves pile up on the shore

A Rip Tide

By Amber "V" Moonstone    7/16/08

Have you ever been caught up in a Rip Tide?
You can’t go anywhere,
No matter how fast you try to swim,
You just tread water and stay in the same place.

Life can seem as though you are caught up in a Rip Tide.
You work long hours, sleep less, and eat irregularly.
feeling as though you don’t seem to be getting ahead of expenses,
No matter how much you conserve, it doesn’t seem to make a difference.

Energy costs are skyrocketing in this country,
You sometimes decide between gas for your car
Or buying groceries for the week.
You can get quite depressed over this economy.

When you feel like you are treading water,
Sometimes just a glance at a loved one,
Or the sound of the birds greeting the morning sun,
Can trigger the release of your anxieties.

You must remain calm,
Go with the flow of the your rip tide,
Stop fighting the waves of anxiety,
And find a way to swim to a safe shore.

Safety is the key to happiness,
When you feel safe,
You begin to erase, all the negativity
that keeps you captive to your rip tidal wave.

Slow down, relax, make safe shore,
a priority for the next few weeks,
seeking calmness of mind, body, and spirit,

No sinking beneath the rip tides of your life.

Peace, love, and light,

Amber "V" Moonstone

Having lived in Daytona Beach, it is famous for rip-tides and summer drownings. I have been caught in the actual ones a few times, but being a surfer I sort of knew what to do. But about those rip-tides of life they are a lot harder to cope with...and harder to know what to do. But your advice is "sound"

Always feared rip tides
I am not a beach swimming person
when there I stay close to shore
But I can swim my butt off in a swimming pool
Love & Peace be with you

Amber,
This makes me think of Bob Dylan's lyrics.."you'd better start swimming or you'll sink like a stone"... as when we are so overwhelmed it is a feeling of drowning. Your poem it full of positive energy and advice!

If you can't win...join in, and let that rip-tide to take you wherever it pleases because you don't mind, you are afloat, so?

So true your wise words and in this current day so appropriate. The anxiety level is high being surrounded by so much uncertainty. "Rip Tide" we used to call in "Spinning our wheels" but the effect is all the same, very creative...

Be always safe,
Karen

I see people in the grocery stores aren't buying as much and taking the smaller carts instead of the larger ones. Today was very hot and I saw lots of people buying ice and submarine rolls and hamburg and hot dog rolls. I guess barbequing was in for today and it isn't even the end of the week or weekend. I was waiting for a friend to get her groceries and take her home and noticed this. people are trying to economize as you said. I am up to not driving as much either with the high cost of gas. Stay home more than ever.

I love this analogy and the wonderful advice that does multi duty for both the actual rip tide and life in general. It is often too easy to panic.

Amber,

Having been caught in a Rip, you capture it perfectly. Can't go anywhere, except out to sea - panic sets in. Oh, God, you're going under: relax. Swim parallel to shore. You'll get out of it and will be able to get back to a safe place. I know. :) Great metaphor/anology to just relax and let it flow. Well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Hi Amber, this is a great analogy in terms of comparing a rip tide to life.Everybody knows we live in very tough times to the price of gas and groceries to the economy. We have to stay positive and appreciate the littliest things that we have.Sometimes I would go to a waterfront park in the city and just enjoy the views of the cityskyline, enjoy the birds singing like they are in a choir, and just enjoy the fact that I'm alive.Hearing the water crash onto the rocks. It is music to my ears.I have some family members who are just a force of negativity in terms of how they act, conduct themselves and how they talk to me and to other people.I don't let their negativity wear off on them, but deep down inside my heart I really don't want them to be a part of my life if they are not going to change their ways.

I think everybody should take time out for themselves and smell the roses so to speak.Just have space to themselves and find a quiet place in their homes or whereever and think about what makes them happy.I enjoy reading your poem and the message it sends.I will not let a rip tide drown me out from complete happiness and neither should you or any other poet/writer in the Author's Den.Take care of yourself

Edwin
