This is about the magnificent desert tortoise, which unfortuneatly may soon disappear. PIcture has been added.
He crawls along the desert floor
Very slowly and on all fours.
His hardened shell a masterpiece
A design by God that rivals
anything Man could make.
Loving the desert heat, he goes
foraging for something to eat.
Not a lot right now, so he heads
across the land where a cactus is his feast
When the heat is too much for him to bear
He makes himself a little home below the soil
As winter time comes and brings the cold air,
he stays in his home and falls fast asleep. He’ll
come back to life in the warmth of spring.
These amazing beasts are hard to find, their
species, the endangered kind. They would
be so happy in the desert and their happy homes.
But they would be with us so much longer if Man
would learn to leave them alone.

Another one I didn't know about that is having a hard time sharing habitat with man. A shame, as we too in FL have a "gopher tortoise that is endangered for a similar reason: whenever they build new homes his underground tunnels are destroyed and he likely buried alive to smother.
I wish you had a jpg picture to post. I've never seen one. Are they beautiful? It's tough to be a "slow creature in a fast world"
Excellent poem and thoughts. It's not just the animals that we mess with. It's their habitat. They can't live if we turn their world upside down.

How sad that so many of our animal friends are slowly and unfortunately quietly slipping in the isles of time basically unnoticed. Another of God's creatures to succumb to fate, making me wonder when it will be mankinds turn....
