Monstrous waves in the blackest of nights,
Tossing their ship onto massive crests,
Before dropping them into bottomless caverns.
Exhausted they clung to whatever they could
Praying that Neptune soon release his deathly grip!
Shattered timbers and broken rails,
Evidence of the brutal assault the storm had unleashed.
Prayers were all they had now,
For the souls of fellow crewmembers already lost,
And for the hope that lives in every human heart!
The unrelenting sea cruelly ravaged their vessel,
As it tortured their weary minds!
And the incessant nightmare continued!
Long into a starless night, the savage wind howled,
Like a thousand banshees hungry for blood!
Neptune’s rage at their struggle to survive,
To deny him his spiteful will,
Turned the vicious winds around once more,
Sending the storm back toward the crippled ship.
Waves like mountains ripped into her hull,
As the men cried out and faced their doom!
When night finally released its grip,
And a glorious sunrise, glimmering on a calm sea
Overtook the last remnants of darkness,
There was not a trace of the ship.
The bodies of the fishermen,
Spoils of war in Neptune’s deep!
His wrath had been appeased,
But the souls of the fisherman were home at last!

This is a blast of a poem. Relentless. Yet I can imagine seamen of yore telling such verse over a pint of ale and a tot of rum.
