What is it good for? Absolutely everything (Who knows the play on lyrics?) A 90something friend half-jokingly reacted recently with "smart aleck" when I tried complimenting her by saying most people are younger than she. Intending the commentary on her longevity to be a wisecrack was the farthest thing from my mind, but her remark does get one to thinking.
Is it bad to be old? I certainly don't think so, and indeed prefer to think of age from the top down rather than the bottom up. Now in my 70s, I can look back on accomplishments made and challenges met and can anticipate more of both yet to be. As a Christian, I believe in God and that life goes on in a new dimension after our earthly time has passed. But I am no rush to hurry the process along. Indeed, a sign at my former place of employment declared "It's not that life is so short but that you're dead for so long."
My aged friend (intended as another compliment) is cut from that same cloth. She said she intends to celebrate turning 100 by going on a cruise. More power to her, and to all the nonagenarians among us. I intend to join you one fine day, Lord willing, and on the cruise too.
