Take a look first- and this is done best by taking a little trip down to your local bookstore- and see the types of books they have offered for sale. Now which kind do you gravitate towards? That one over there? Okay so pick it up and really look at it- the way the covers are done, front and back, the quality of the pages, the colors used and the size of the book. Is it something that you want to read? Okay then, then that’s the way your own book should look. Is it something that you want to read? Okay then, then that’s the way your own book should look.
Many people try to save a few dollars by using more inexpensive paper or choosing a really small size (like many of the little paperbacks) but think about it- does it feel good in your hand? Does the paper feel rough and are you squinting to read the words? Then think about someone buying that book – would they choose yours or another book that may be more esthetically pleasing?
When I visit my local Barnes & Nobles I am not only attracted to a book based on a subject but also in how the book looks to me. If it’s one of those small paperbacks with the yellowish pages I usually will pass it by. I’m sure that you also have your own preferences when it comes to what you like as well.
At my last book fair, I shared a booth with a wonderful lady and she had a book there that just seemed the perfect size. The book cover was well done and the pages felt like silk. Many people commented (and bought) this one particular book because it was so well done.
Think about that before you publish- what will make YOUR book stand out among so many others?
