Love Is Seen Best With Closed Eyes 7/7/2008 4:14:55 AM
Did you see the fireworks? Everyone keeps asking. Either on television or in person, one is expected to view the fireworks on July 4th. But what if you just closed your eyes this year and visualized them? The best firework show on earth right there in your mind, available to you at any time and in any place? Do the fireworks have to be external to be real, to be counted?
There's something that happens when you begin to see with your mind. Boundaries fall and all laws of existence become fading voices in memory. The realness of the experience is fluid. We so often limit ourselves to sight, taste, touch, sound and smell. If we do not do these things, does it mean it's not real? Then what of love?
I can write all day about love. I can buy tokens of love. I can perform acts of love. But is it "love"?
I'm learning, or perhaps accepting, that love is not found on a page, and for me, such a romantic poet, this is like admitting the earth revolves around the sun (LOL).
In the truth, I find that love is not bound by acts, performances, adventures, advertising, stories and poems that anyone at any time can write about whomever they choose, real or imagined. Love is. Simple and true. It either exists or it doesn't. And what you feel can never be captured in any act. It is unfair to apply some measuring stick to it and make an assessment based on which tick of the stick it lands on. If love is kept on a score card, then it is a game you are playing, and not love. The game of love is not love. Love is what you feel.
And it comes as the scent of the rain on the wind before a storm. It comes in a glance, when eyes reveal what's truly in the soul. It comes as you lay side by side at night, the closest you can be to total vulnerability with another person - in your helpless state of sleep. It comes when you close your eyes, and you see - the fireworks.
Sometimes what matters most has little to no basis in the physical world. What matters is what can only be seen with the mind's eye.
