Why Do We Do This?

Answering the question can be a challenge
A not-infrequent question asked of authors is, "Briefly, what is your book about?" With that in mind, I have worked at telling what my forthcoming book is about, when the time comes, in one sentence and am happy with the result. But a corollary to that question could be, "Why did you write your book?" Answering it can be equally challenging.
After all, why do we write? There are many reasons, of course. There's the love of writing, the need to vent, desire to impress, to see our name in print, to earn a living or add a few bucks while keeping the day job. Maybe it's a hobby, or an escape, a chore even, or being alone with nothing else to do.
Ask any writer why they do it and you'll get any and more of those responses above. But better yet, ask a writer to not just explain why they write but do to so in one sentence. So I took myself to that next step and asked the question. Here, after some thought and self-editing, is my answer. When I write, I'm telling myself a story that I really really like.
