O Christmas Tree, Our Christmas Tree 1/4/2023 12:34:07 PM
Farewell, friend The sparkling lights are packed away again along with the star and the ornaments, generic and treasured. For four weeks, our beloved Christmas tree gave us joy each evening and often during the mornings too brightening our living room and corner of the world. It's always as sad saying goodbye to this friend as it is joyous selecting her.
Is it strange to feel affection toward a Christmas tree? I think not, any more so than it is to feel that way about a book or an heirloom or a gift from a parent, sibling, or dear friend. A fine fella who has now passed on to the next life liked to say that even a table feels a sense of value by knowing it meets the needs of those sitting around it. In that spirit, I like to believe that the affection toward our departed Christmas tree, we named her Noel, was reciprocated by a joy she felt in giving us joy.
Noel may no longer decorate our house but the memory of her presence does, and I will lovingly remember her long after the snow melts and the summer's sun returns. Farewell, dear friend, and thank you for sharing your life, and Christmas, with us. We wouldn't have wanted to spend the blessed season any other way.
