Evolutionary Gamble

On a sun blistering afternoon
standing alone
on a platform anchored
in twelve feet of Atlantic Ocean,
trying to gauge just how far I
have to swim
to reach the shore,
and how to summon the nerve
to spring toward the sky,
my aching body
arching over a circle
of terrorizing bell-shaped nettles,
their tentacles stretched like barbed wire,
waiting to snare me,
it occurs to me
that these primitive life forms and I
are distant relatives,
going back some three billion years
to the time
we had a common ancestor,
a deep-sea gelatinous germ perhaps,
and they’ll probably be glad
to see me
on my belated return to mother sea,
though I could be wrong.

"though I could be wrong."

This, of course, is an indicator of humble intelligence. No matter how strong and empowered our thoughts make us feel, or how good we are at expressing them, there is always the possibility that they are just a load of shit. Image laden musings ...

Gene - liked the humor and irony in the intellectual musings contrasted with the doubt expressed in the last line. Thought provoking. - David

Gene, I loved the humor in this writing. A lot of us wouldn't want to face a reunion with many of our past relatives...there might be another Hatfield and McCoy war.

The thought weighs heavy that you DID NOT take that gamble of reunion, Gene!! Methinks time has stretched the loyalty...
But I find the thought imaginative and tempting, and wonderfully expressed in your poem, dear friend!

Oh the ocean sounds so wonderful until I think of all the relatives I might run into. Have fun but stay safe Gene. Terrific poem and thoughts. Love, Bonnie
