call of the surf

his shadow
limps across the sand.

at water’s edge
she (who rules his thoughts) takes his hand,
leads him beyond the dunes
to a bed of pine needles

there their embrace a sacred experience,
shakespeare’s holy fire of love.

soon cooled by the distance of time,
the chill off the sea,
the pain he harbors takes flight
with the gulls.

his cane she casts into the surf,
he trips over his shadow,
they seek the shelter of a sand castle...

night falls with a whisper.

It's all dreams for us these days--dreams and memories--but these will keep us going, that and the sound/sight of surf. Must get to the sea -- it's becoming imperative -- and your poems, as always, an inspirational image!

Only true love can do this: mix the unassailable tenderness of Shakespearean "holy fire (of) love" with the banishment of all hindrances - and THEN to risk also the "falling on the face" knowing that, notwithstanding, there will still be the fairytale castle for the Prince and Princess of Shared Heart to shelter in. No wonder night falls with a reverential whisper. And doubtless the lapping waves also sigh a contented "Aaaaaaaahhhhhhh!" A beautiful capture that enshrines the healing honesty, openness and "nothing mattering" of the "real thing". xx

Your skill simmers marvelously in this Gene. To me you paint a challenged character who still has hope, and dreams of the days that passion inundated his life like energizing waves. Peace to you ... r

Gene, this is so beautiful...on the surface, this seems like easy, day to day poetry...but there is so much that lies beneath. The power of the mind ...of thoughts...truly beautiful works.

Gene, your creative talent and wonderful soaring imagination succumbed to the "call of the surf". And those irrepressible galls, what a marvelous elixir they are. Now gather the essence of the salt air with deep breath and create another beautiful poem for us. May peace love and joy be always with you my dear friend. Jon Michael

Simply beautiful, Gene. I so love "he trips over his shadow, they seek shelter of a sand castle..."

The world of our mind transcends the world of our body and our mind is as limitless as our imagination allows. We all should let the gulls fly our pain away. Sending love, Gina
