The Leaf Lives
By John Herlihy

The leaf lives in spite of every obstacle;
The leaf gives of itself as a sacred oracle.
The branch grows shoots in stages of green;
The leaf begins to emerge wishing to be seen.
Young leaves shine the infant light of sea marine;
Later they deepen their color into an emerald sheen.
They own their color, from Mother Nature they wean.
How they bud and freely flourish remains to be seen.
A mystery inducing wonder, they multiply forever rife,
Until they wither and finally die, giving up their life.
Sunlight shines thru color to reveal veins and tributaries;
The leaf itself ranks high amid the groves of Nature’s votaries.
The leaf seems happy, waving to the world in wonder;
No sound but pure miracle, as I begin to hear thunder.

There certainly is a whole universe while examining a leaf. Have you ever noticed that falling leaves are filled with spots and blemishes just like human skin. The color comes from trace minerals left behind in the leaf after the green chlorophyll has left the leaf for winter.

Your poem evokes many thoughts.

a leaf life is like the Mid-Autumn Festival we are going thru these days. . . the full moon's hangover ;)) all tints and colours of a leaf are great in the due time of seasons. . . Nice poem. Cheers, alex

Ah yes, the solitary leaf. Another wonder of nature that we see on a daily basis. The leaf is regarded with awe throughout the stages of its brief life.
