My Name Is Winter
By John Herlihy

My name is Winter; I am one of four seasons;
God gave me harshness for His good reasons.
Spring betokens rebirth with scolding rains;
Summer sunshine brings warmth to the plains.
Autumn marks the season of harvest fruition;
Dying leaves herald winter by its own admission.

My name is winter; my middle name wrath.
A season of laid waste with my sacred staff.
A blanket of white covers the barren earth;
Few birds linger for long in this forsaken turf.
Giant trees dressed in white, branches brittle;
Snow flurries fall from Heaven little by little.

My name is Winter; I bring with me scourge;
The breath of death doth the landscape purge.
Cold and heartless, wild winds howl and cry;
Wolves echo its call; but the pine trees sigh.
The lovely fawn in this ravaged land seems lost;
Wandering idly, seeking shelter at great cost.

My name is Winter; I bring with me beauty;
Every season bears its own profound duty.
The season of snow brings awe in a falling flake,
Unique and silent, bringing peace in its wake.
The forest in bridal gowns have noble presence;
Its quiet humor boasts of an eternal quiescence.

My name is Winter; I can go by no other name;
I fulfill my sacred duty without incurring blame.

Very nice. I get the feeling of a great wise man, Winter, striding across the landscape.

Winter, I love Winter's in the Colorado countryside. Not so much in the city where the snow is dirty and the skies are not so pretty. Still, I must agree, Winter serves a useful purpose especially for those who like to ski. Well done!

It is amazing how fauna and flora have adapted to and thrive during the winter when all the bad things are killed by the cold. And also amazing how quickly dead things come back from the dead in spring.

You have written a marvelous description of a marvelous time in our planet's annual turning on its axis while rotating around the sun. So predictable for eons allowing life to adapt to the most extreme conditions and rebound easily during warmer time.

Bring on old man winter,
with lots of snow.
I like it cold,
at least 10 below.

We need the freezing cold to kill the bad stuff out there.

Agreed, John. Although I bitterly complain about winter and even and even summer I know within my heart both are needed . . . Still I would prefer that we had only two seasons ... Autumn and summer.

You've described the highs and lows of winter in living color of details. A season of wrath and rains leave behind silence and peace in its falling snow.
