Night Rain
By John Herlihy

Faint smells herald a change of weather;
Misty dew tickles my nose like a feather.
The sandy air was brittle all the day long,
Wind as soft and crisp as a child’s song.

Night insects turn silent in quiet reserve;
Night birds fluff their wings and observe.
Night air stirs, causing vague premonition;
The mind pauses in wonder, in contrition.

Night rain arrives as cymbals and brass;
Soggy earth soon flooded in deep morass.
Silence is broken by unannounced sound;
Another side of nature appears profound.

The night rain sparkles luminescent light,
Infinitesimal stars to illuminate the night.
Filling the darkness as wind fills the sail,
With secret messages to be read as braille.

Night silence hushed with incredible poise,
Night rain now thundered with wild noise.
Drumming notes have rhythms held at bay,
With forgotten memories that seldom stay.

You are now here, this moment, this day,
The rain echoes rhythms of away and away.
Drenching rain as all the flowers frowned,
Water spouts and so too the leaves drowned.

With the cacophony of music suddenly still,
What strikes my ear has suddenly lost its will.
From a windy branch the last drops now fall,
Night rain is silenced, but the trees stand tall.

THOUGH THE RAIN IN THE NIGHT AND ITS WONDERFUL SYMPHONY, DESTROYED MUCH...IT ILLUMINATES THE BEAUTY OF THE TREES THAT STOOD TALL IN SPITE OF IT. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

I, like Michael, am lulled to sleep by night rain pelting the roof and windows. Beautiful poem!

Love ya!

I love to fall asleep at bedtime, listening to the gentle lullaby of a night rain. A beautiful poem, that captures the essence of a night rain.

What a beautiful description of how we all have experienced "night rain." I have been watching the reality series, Naked and Afraid. While clean water for drinking is essential within three days of their arrival, and on hot nights, insects become a great torment, it is only when the rain comes at night that it is so cold and so wet that the misery sets in and even hypothermia becomes possible.

In your case you could add another line. Night rain slips silently into the sand, for there are no trees, at all. ;-)

We have, one and all, been witness' to the "Night Rain" you wrote so eloquently about, but few can conjure up the words and phrases as you have so eloquently done. Enjoyed this much.

the last stanza is so much visual and clip-making that I feel the tasteless taste of those falling drops on my lips. . . Cheers, alex

A lovely theme for this rainy night, soft as it is. Winter still resides just offstage but for now I am enjoying this brief taste of spring to come.
