Man and old Mom Ocean, a constant struggle for supremacy...

Poem Artwork

Sand dunes…

Sand dunes placed there by man,

Supposedly to protect against mom oceans wrath,

The waves they know better,

To first undermine the dunes,

Then to overcome them once they are just small piles,

That is when the sea and man’s land shall meet…

Homes built on pilings,

Up one level from the sand,

If that is necessary, then why build so close,

To the ocean and waves, as they do the most,

Sand dunes only a short-term protector,

They only last just so long,

Then the sea will surround the homes on pilings,

Making humans scared more willing to know they are wrong,

To build their homes so close to the sea,

They understand their mistake; they are willing to see…

Sand dunes are there still strong and proud,

Dune grass too, to hold the sand about,

Snow fencing can help, to keep trash off the beach,

And man’s primping of the dune, trying to keep the sea out of reach,

But they try to keep the land dry, by upkeep of the dune, they also teach,

So they try to help old mom Nature in her upkeep of the Natural order,

While they try to keep old Mom Ocean from flooding the beach,

And surrounding homes that are for the dunes a bit of a border…

You have written about the struggle which I have wondered about almost all my life. Man can postpone, but the waves will prevail. (:D Wonderful write, Ed!

When my feet touch sand my body is already in the water :-) On the CA coast many build their homes near the cliff.......that always have mud slides as the homes slide into the ocean. Nature will always take her place no matter what mankind does. Wonderful write.

Fine poem, Ed! I love sand dunes. Even in a photo
this 'desolate,' there is beauty.
