A WAX JOB
Capt. Jim went overboard with the wax,
Giving his boat a coat.
Keeping his craft seaworthy,
Meant keeping his boat afloat.
He waxed the deck.
He waxed the rails.
He waxed the mast,
That held the sails.
He waxed his boat,
From stem to stern.
Getting that shipshape shine,
Was his main concern.
The deck sparkled and shined,
And it sure looked nice.
But Capt. Jim had a problem,
The deck was now slick as ice.
Capt. Jim couldn’t stand up,
Without falling down.
Every step he tried to take,
Was followed by a crashing sound.
Capt. Jim went slip sliding away,
And disappeared from sight
He was never seen again,
And they searched day and night.
Now the moral of this story is,
You can over wax a car,
And still have a shiny coupe.
But go overboard waxing a boat,
And you’re on a slippery sloop.

True story: One time while at the tiller of a 32 foot Danish all wood folkboat, I was sailing around Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay when the fog drifted in. Next thing I knew, I was on my back on the bottom of the boat with its ribs bouncing off my ribs. Whether Capt. Nemo had waxed that sloop or not, it sure took me for a slippery slidey loop!
And it's a good thing that I went under board rather than overboard!
