It was fun to write anyway

Late Arrival

I told the guy at the riding stable I need a horse as a teacher,
Said try ol’Dobbin, he’s gotta be good; once belonged to a preacher,

I was kinda skeptical, horses weren’t my thing,
But I’d paid my rental fee; now I’ll take a fling,

Ol’Dobbin didn’t impress me as the safest thing to ride
Matter of fact, I began to think, I should have stayed inside,

He had Boring eyes of the devil and breath a slobbering froth
But, He had to be a good horse, he belonged to a man of the cloth,

I soon found out he had no brakes, just took off like a shot,
Blazing speed and I’m hanging on with everything I’ve got,

I wonder if that preacher man gave away this horse for free,
Because After a shot of ol’Dobbin, he’s probably RIP,

A safe escape was not to be, a ragged cliff was in my path,
And over the edge we tumbled as I expressed my wrath,

Forgive me lord, but I can’t stop this miserable son of a beast,
I really don’t mind dying but spare me the pain at least

A freeway there was just below; and the scene of a terrible wreck,
And into this mess I tumbled; it should have broken my neck,

0l’Dobbin didn’t make it, he landed in a heap,
He might could win the Derby, but he wasn’t much to leap,

Highway patrol pulled in ; His red lights were a flashing,
I lay prone upon my back , beat up from the crashing,

Now I wasn’t in no shape for a grilling session
But This Patrolman came a running and, had this urgent question

What in God’s name happened man? Did that pick up hit that shelf ?
I Said, I have no idea officer I just got here myself !

Self rhymes with "shelf," but I have no idea what that pickup hit? Are there shelves on freeways?
