Hunter's Dilemma

A silver frost, icecycles in the air.
The sunrise shimmers as on diamonds.
A magical morning,An angels lair.
Shimering ice on natures ponds.

The sun drives back nights dark shadows,
Revealing Falls glorious rainbow colours.
Peering over orange glistening meadows,
nestled behind sun and wind dried flowers.

The man lies watching the princes trail.
His breath is short. His eyes straining.
His ears alert,he can not fail.
Lying still so long, his muscles paining.

A snap of a twig,the bushes rustle.
Is he coming? He lifts his rifle.
The sound,it's to the right,hustle.
The prince is smart, not one to trifle.

To his right the man runs full tilt.
The prince had circled around him.
Rubber boots slipping on the meadows silt.
Eyes straining to see in the mornings dim.

Suddenly a shadow,no time to think.
They crash together in complete dismay.
Both stunned and shaken in the dawns light pink.
The prince is down in the meadows hay.

The man raises his rifle,"I've got you now".
The prince stands up in one smooth move,
lifts his head as to say"and how?"
The man is frozen,a magical scene is wove.

Their eyes lock. It's a silent battle.
"I am a prince.This my domain.
You can't hunt me. I'm not your cattle!
You don't need food. Why cause me pain?"

The war was lost. The man dropped his gun.
The prince ran off in autumns splendour.
The man stood in silence in the morning sun
His mind a daze at this dawns hour.

Had the beast talked, was he losing his mind?
No more urge to hunt but back to camp at a run.
Searching for answers he couldn't find.
Oblivious to the beauty in the bright morning sun.

Back at the camp was old hunter Bill.
The man told him his story of dawn's morning run.
"Bill, did that animal talk or did I lose my will?"
"No he didn't talk".Said Bill"that was your conscience son."
