Amid cobwebs and dust, memories lay
In quiet reflection of yesterday,
Nostalgic moments of time unmeasured,
Captured innocence of keepsakes treasured.
In one gilded chest of heirloom's echoes
Are vintage gowns, scents of lilac and rose,
Books with yellowed pages, such classic lines
Of fairy tales and once-upon-a-time,
Locks of hair, blankets, and baby's first shoes
Safely tucked between old pages of news.
A rosary, faith's chain of tarnished beads
Beckons soft whispers of remembered creeds.
Old letters of love and paper memories crushed,
Each remnants of a heartbeat forever touched.
Now closing the lid on these fading years
And leaving behind an unnoticed tear,
Captured where treasures in the attic lay...
Amid cobwebs and dust of yesterday.
So poignantly beautiful. The traces of a lifetime filled with remembrance. It is a woman's collection, though. My own attic contains little of this, in fact, little at all because I did not collect and maintain much from my past… I just lived it. A photograph here, a brochure there, a little souvenir that I picked up in a market in either Karachi or Cairo, I forget, a box full of technical papers presented long ago, is all that I have… No remembrances of marriage or children to clutter my recollection.
