Two days ago, we reached a record 105°. But my air-conditioned house remained a comfortable 80°. Last night, I was feeling quite warm and checked the thermostat, discovering that it was 88° in the house. My spinal cord injury makes me very susceptible to both heat and cold. Needless to say, I had an uncomfortable night's sleep. My A/C company says that it will be out here between 3 and 5 o'clock today. By that time, it is supposed to be 99°. I have two fans and poor circulation in the house from three open windows. I cannot go outside under a shade tree to cool off. This computer is throwing heat in my face. Wish me luck. PS. 8/14/15 After two hot sleepless nights, my A/C was repaired with a compressor motor and capacitor.

Heat

Who would deny the heat of passion?
The kind of temperature that never,
ever, goes out of fashion.

Who would deny the heat of a fire?
Warming the soul and flaming desire.

Keeping us alive from the bitter cold,
saving lives through eons untold.

But we seek refuge from the heat of the day,
the shade of a tree, or where cool waters be,
for some, there is no other way.

How many have lain, in a hot bed at night,
sweating profusely, their dreams filled with fright.

For weather is not kind, nor is it evil,
it cares not for comfort, nor for its people.

We have evolved to weather, weather's whims,
we can stand the heat, and survival wins.

For the old and the weak, heat can be a curse,
a period of great suffering, followed by a hearse.

In air-conditioned cubicles, we now live our lives,
we avoid the heat, and our productivity thrives.

But when power is turned off, we cook in our hives,
designed for our comfort, but not to save lives.

So we must be careful not to heat up our earth,
we can adapt to changes for what it's worth.

But all of the earth creatures do not have our ability,
they adapt by survival and genetic agility.

So let's all act in a responsible way,
and keep the deadly heat at bay.

GLAD YOU GOT RELIEF RON, I UNDERSTAND HOW YOU MUST HAVE FELT. HOWEVER, LET ME SHARE SOMETHING WITH YOU. I LIVE IN GEORGIA, USA AND IT CAN GET REALLY HOT DOWN HERE BUT I DON'T USE THE AIR CONDITIONING IN MY SENIOR CITIZEN'S, UTILITIES INCLUDED, RENTED APARTMENT. WHY? MY ALLERGIES WON'T STAND IT. I'D RATHER THE HEAT THAN THE COUGHING, WHEEZING, SNEEZING, NOSE DRIPPING, RUNNING, RED EYES EFFECT OF THE AIR CONDITIONING...JUST CAN'T TAKE THE ARTIFICIAL AIR. BUT THANK GOD I LIVE ON THE 8TH FLOOR, HAVING 'HUGE' WINDOWS(WITH SCREENS OF COURSE)THAT I LEAVE WIDE OPEN - A GREAT BREEZE BLOWS IN MOST OF THE TIME. JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF ONE OF HIS BLESSED 'RELIEFS' ALONG THE WAY(SMILE). THANKS FOR THE SHARE. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

I lived in Phoenix and the air (water cooler) went out in June. I truly understand. The poem is wonderful. You expressed a very intense situation with a little bit of butter. Stay safe, my friend.

I also react badly to both heat & cold. Forced to use my air conditioner both because of heat and because of my wife's recent breathing problems. Also she is always hot. When we were younger it was the opposite. Trying to sleep with the Air on makes for a difficult night but is better & safer then sleeping in 90+ degree weather. I seem lucky not to have central air. Last time one of my window air conditioners broke, I stayed in my bedroom till it was replaced. So good luck Ron. Think of a backup room air conditioner. Just a thought, Oh, I enjoyed the poem.

Not an easy time for you Ron. Of course the A/C never fails on the coldest day and the heat never fails on the hottest day. We are very much creatures of comfort in this day and time. We have been blessed with many creature comforts and when we are forced to do without them it makes us most uncomfortable and short tempered. Two days was a lot for you to endure with your physical condition. May peace and love be always with you my friend. Jon Michael

Keeping your cool and writing. That is truly a trooper when "The
Heat Is On." Fine writing and good messages.

Air-conditioning helps us ignore the environment outside. The drought in Southwest USA reaches all the north to BC, Canada, where there are a near record forest fires.

Staying cool with the AC on,
in the blistering heat.
We don't miss it till it's gone,
and then we're beat.

Glad you got your AC fixed, but like Ed said, I'd get a back up. At any rat, this was a cool write.

Power wise, or the lack thereof, we should all have some sort of generator, but when an a/c unit dies, maybe we should keep around the house an extra window unit...at least your bedroom will stay cool & they even make units that do not have to go into the window nowadays...stay cool, Ron & keep that damn heat in Texas...-e-

I offer up to you the experience in Doha, Qatar where I live. Daily temperatures up to 120 degrees fareheight is par for the course. Without conditioning, it is impossible to survive, making me appreciate what you have attempted to describe. John

Too much metal, concrete, and asphalt!!! We built our own demise.

Glad your AC has been restored. A timely poem for New England as well - the heat and humidity are returning with a vengeance. "My kingdom for a breeze!" More than a creative and clever poem, you've included a cautionary measure we as a society would do well to heed with respect to our planet.

I, of course, relate. If we have a power failure here I immediately go into a panic/anxiety attack. Sometimes I have thoughts, during the power failure to go to WalMart (if the power failure doesn't affect it), bu I can do that and leave my little mutt to suffer alone in the heat.

As you so adroitly point out, when we're uncomfortable with the heat, we forget the many varied ways we not only enjoy, but need warmth and heat to survive. Well penned in a playful choice of mood. (After all, as your summary attests, you could have been much more testy over your day's suffering."
