We have been locked in by ice for three days. Quite unusual for Houston. It made our freeways quite impassable. But frozen pipes and dead plants are no fun either. House fires are the worst.

Ice

Ice is nice in our cold drink,
a luxury we don't even think.
Keeps cool hot summer day,
refreshing after strenuous play.

Ice is deadly on the road.
Slip-sliding like a greased toad.
No matter what direction head,
ice takes control increasing dread.

Often a slow-motion horror,
car berserk like never before,
heading for some awful crash,
or off the road in a dash.

Heavy laden bough and limb,
weight of ice to the brim.
Some will come crashing down,
electricity out brings a frown.

Ice forms over water like glass,
keeps the rest from freezing.
Caught in a desert of ice and snow,
water everywhere, to drink? No.

An ice storm brings glittering palace,
a fairytale landscape, deadly malice.
For creatures large and small,
ice can cause suffering to them all.

So next time you savor ice in your drink,
or view a glittering landscape, think.
Someone or some animal may have died,
so you can drink up with cool lipped pride.

Great write Ron, I really loved it! Nature smiles and nature frowns and nature will always be around, prepare and enjoy! Peace!!!

Ron,
In Connecticut any of our waterways have ice chunks in them. It is causing havoc where we have draw bridges, they can't function properly. I have to say though, it is a beautiful site to behold.
I will take ice with my drink please!
Peace love and light ice,
Amber

Ice can have many a purpose, I like it best served with a drink, or accumulated at the ocean shore, love your writing Ron, thanks for sharing. Cheers, clink clink !

Love the picture and the thoughtful comparison of the good and bad things H2O's solid form can bring. Glittering like diamonds across a field, refreshing on a summer's day ... but an icy heart brings pain and an icy dagger can kill. Sliding across the ice on skates to win Olympic Gold, but sliding on rubber tires into another car ... it all reminds us that beautiful things always carry an element of danger. The yin and the yang are always out there lurking inside of everything around us. Thanks for a Sunday smile.

Ron,
Very nice and clever poem.
Yes ice, like water, can not be taken for granted.

I don't like to tempt fate in icy road conditions. Better to observe the beauty of tree branches encased in ice from a window seat.

Yes, ice on the road can be treacherous indeed. I remember years ago being caught on an icy road in the city and just had to "go with the flow" as they say.

Ice can be beautiful, if observed from a safe warm environment, but if you're out there in it, it can be pretty catastrophic. Animals generally adapt to the weather, but vehicles are another story. When it's icy out, one should stay at home if at all possible. I did enjoy your poem Ron.

It is a very, very scary situation when you are foolish enough to venture out on ice slick roads. Even more scary is when all of a suddenly the road you are are traveling on become slick with ice. Deadly even. Stay away from them whenever possible.

Interesting consideration you offer here. Such a simple thing those ice moments in the summer. But, as you've portrayed here, Nature is what it is and there's a degree of sadness in her need to cycle our environments. Well penned.
