Haiku Chain: Cicadas (17 Year Locusts)

Cicadas (also called 17 year locusts) are making their appearance in a number of Midwestern, Eastern and Southern states. What I remember most about them is their (loud) song and their red-devil eyes. :-)

17 year nap
think they have slept long enough
emergence begins

coming out  !  party  !
they live only to make love
then burst forth in song

alas, life is short
but the next generation
pledges, "i'll be back"

Well done Karla! I'll never forget the cicadas
when I lived in Illinois. We had an infestation
one year of the Dutch Elms trees. It was unbelievable.

Fantastic Haiku, Karla, just beautifully done!

I have never seen these Cicadas, but I did see them on the national news, very interesting little critters...
And they are truly loud! hahaha.

Hugs and love
Sheila

Very Good, Karla!

Life, for them, is, indeed, short - above ground. And I have to admire any critter who lives underground for 17 years - sucking plant juice.

PS One of my mutts, Turbo, just ate one - I 'chewed' him out good!

(((Karla)))

I remember the song of the cicada and those creepy red-devil eyes, too! ICK! *cringing* I HATE bugs, especially ugly cicadas! How can something SO hideous have such a beautiful song?? (Oh, yeah...they are lookin' for LOOVVVVVVVVVVVE!! LOL) Wonderful poem that brings back memories! Thanks for sharing; enjoyed~

(((HUGS))) and much love, your twin, Karen Lynn. :D

We got lucky here and they stayed about 10 miles north of those nasty bugs, just I guess if I lived in the ground for 17 years and new I only had a few weeks when I got outside I raise fuss also.
