Blinking in the freshening gale, he stood firm: no damnfool storm was going to chase him away. Wife and kids could go, he was staying. Been through these things, before: he and house came out alright. His home, all he knew: born here, raised here, it was there when he went off to war, greeted him on his return, got married on the front porch, for Pete's -- he wasn't going nowhere. He lifted his drink and roared at the hurricane: try and get me, ya bastard. The hurricane answered: two years later, he's still missing.
I'm reading all your "KatrinaPoems". Good writing, people need reminding, it can happen again, but probably somewhere else. Complaceny sets in fast. Another tough season coming. You were there -- I thought my little 2004 Florida season bad! Although Frances flooded my house in South Daytona, it was repairable and Charley knocked down our trees; It was the 2005 season that made me sell and moved to inland Florida. It's good your motivated to write about these things. I've tracked hurricanes on my computers for 20 years living in Florida and have 100's of satellite photos of the 2005 season on my hard drive if you anyone's need's refreshing

Karla, i lived there for 20 years before moving to Arizona. I was glued to the weather channel for ever, watching, waiting. Then the news coverage, hoping I would not see anyone I knew who still lived there. Thank God I didn't. I still have family and friends there and I hope the area recovers soon. Though much of it's history and ambience has washed away, no force of nature could ever wash away the spirit and the soul of the people.
God bless you and all of native N'Awlins :)

OOOH POWERFUL penning~it twists my heart!!!
heartfelt, bit eery too~but one must say that man howled one last time didn't he...Yes, my thoughts have never forgotten that hurricane, as her anniversary embarks upon...a strange, engrossing feeling abounds~prayers
The brownish picture of times past went by carried by the rain water that was running on the gutter, going somewhere, leaving, to left no memory about a home with friends barbequing in the back yard where that old picture was taken.
After it...nothing was left behind, just a lot of life's junk.

Heartwrenching write, Karla; powerful and hardhitting in its content. Very well done; brava! May we never forget the nightmare that was Katrina, a horror that sadly still goes on for far too many. God help those poor people!

So very very sad, Karla, and a fate far too many fell victim to.
I met a very valiant soul in his 70s when I went down there; he was born in that house, and it was all he had left these days; and he worked a few hours every day on it, just to try and keep his life long memories alive. It truly broke my heart, and I truly hope he's still there.
A book of nature inspired poems and essays, written from the heart and soul of a life-long nature, animal, and wilderness lover, and dedicated to today’s children - Earth's only hope for a better tomorrow.

Sometimes the hardest lesson in life
is learning how to let go.
There is a great lesson we can learn from this.
