Georg asked me to pen a poem about a Vietnam Veteran (although it could be any), twice wounded, left to rot and fend for himself. He was a husband, father to twin daughters. He has not seen them since he went off to war. Ostracized by family, by a Nation that prefers to forget, he is homeless - with only medals and ribbons to chew on.
Georg said writing this would heal me of the monstrosity life's given me, and would give voice to a soldier who has been, up 'til now, unheard.
Thank you, Georg, Semper Fi, and God bless all of our men and women in uniform, who ever served, who are serving, who will serve - I will not forget. Thank you.
Medals and ribbons do not make a meal; hard on the teeth. What are they worth? Wounded twice in service to a Nation choosing
to forget - one that took me far from home, away from wife and children - two daughters. Twins. Where were they when I came home on a
stretcher, legs gone, my mind nearly so? Been forty one years - been trying to drown their little faces in bottles of beer - what
do they look like now? Do they have kids and do their kids have kids? Nothing stills the emotional storm in my head, the questions -
the nightmares of being homeless - forgotten - you know, honorable does not always mean 'treated with respect.' Discharge, though,
always means what it says: left behind, with only medals and ribbons to chew on and memories to use as seasoning ...
Karla,
A powerful voice and unforgetable metaphors! As a society, we are ashamed of what was done, but those feelings cannot change the past. You are one of few making a difference! Excellent.
Sheila
Powerful! Powerful stuff! Very confronting as my own dear country has done the same. Thankfully we are now all now moving forward one step at a time. My thanks for the poem.
Oh Karla I understand your pain more than you may realize I ever could. I appreciate from my heart the sacrifice you made and the hurt you have suffered. You are loved and admired for your courage and patriotism.
Made with pain and served with pride, "Emotional Storm" is the bridge that those that didn't knew now they do.
I am very proud of the poem, I am proud of the words giving voice to a discarted Veteran, I am foremost, proud of you, because, down but not defeated you came up and charged the machine gun nest.
Every Veteran should read this piece, yes, I agree with others send it to every Veteran paper there is, with all our blessings.
And thanks for oblige you friend.

...when this poet is called to duty...it is one who has penned a timeless piece...with reverence and respect...with exceptional truth...of having seen.

This breaks my heart - to know these tragedies that have befallen Georg and many over service veterans. We are the land of the free and the brave. Yet, bravery is disrespected through the neglect of those veterans who need more than medals - of what good are medals if they loose everything else in life by making their sacrifice?
Karla, this is such a compelling, passionate and truthful view of the injustices perpetrated upon those who fight to protect the U.S.
May God bless you, Georg, and the many veterans who have been lost in the bureaucratic b.s. Kathy
Karla, now this is a true masterpiece and a great honor for all who have served and been brushed aside and forgotten by so many. You have certainly done yourself proud with this one and I find this is one I will not let go of. A tribute to the many I knew who are just names on a wall....
Bless you Karla, this is a call to arms, against callous governments and ungrateful induviduals, those that not value the precious lifes of precious human beings especially soldiers that went to war on their request, is a country that treats their veterans so callously, worth fighting for, as I said it is a call to arms for another big fight, the fight against callous governments, it has to change, it better change, if not, all the enemies have won, the enemies are us, if we don't care, or learn to care more deeply, not just hand out medals, no matter how well deserved but also the help needed, to make the returnies life just a little bit better, and for their honour a lot more. There is no way that a man like our friend Georg, can be compensated for his pain, and loss, ever, but trying should be the goal, my God what does it take? Wake up America the enemy is within, fight for what is right! ask your next canditate how he is going to make their lives better, and how and what honest God fearing assessment he would use to send the other soldiers to war.
Vote your concience while you still can for all the veterans, while it's still in your hands! Karla this is truly an outstanding and heartfelt poem to a good and honourable friend and hero! Bless You! Jasmin Horst
Wow, this is a very powerful write and all too true, especially for the Vietnam vets. You have worded this perfectly and I bet it will help many others in a similiar situation.
Legs gone and memory afire and burning too...this is so sad and the monster here isn't this veteran but the government who tossed him out without his legs to feind for himself. It's damned embarrassing that my country has no compassion. It makes me cry.
Love and blessings,
Susan
Karla, my heart aches reading this because this so easily could have been my father, my grand-aunt, or one of my uncles or any number of friends. Thank you for giving such an eloquent voice to those we see but don't see everyday. Rebecca
Karla,
i have a very deep fear that history is repeating itself with our current wars.......the guys and gals are being sacrificed to the machine.....emotionialy ,physicialy,drained...it seem s nobody cares

It's what we write and how we write it that draws people to read our work. Such important subject matter so soulfully penned cannot be dismissed. Nor should it be. Bless you Karla and Georg. Soldier on!
Karla,I agree with Jerry, your best! You have found another voice, you had it all the while, but what Georg asked you to write brought it out in full force. You make us feel the torment of the soldier, and anger at the establishment that is so indifferent...Your stint in the service served you well in this one! Bless you!
Wonderful write. Horrible situation. I remember a man who used to come into Sears (while I worked there) and though his body was whole, his mind was shot. He'd croutch down and talk on a pretend walkie-talkie whispered to his probably dead men. Security would follow him around, watching closely, but he was never escorted out of the store. He lived at the VA in Dayton, Ohio so was a community fixture ... everyone felt for him but let him be.
GOD bless everyone who served our country!

Passionate and soulfully driven, Karla . . . I believe you may have found another calling . . . I believe that you have a strong voice for those who do not have one . . . I believe your heart bled with each line written . . . I believe this is THE best fucking thing you have ever written . . . This I believe . . .
I was moved to tears, tears of disappointment at the lack of respect our veterans are given, tears of anger because nobody seems to give a damn for them, tears of compassion at what this particular veteran lost: his family above all. Never mind the legs and his mind: his family will never know the daddy he could have been. POWERFUL, gutwrenching poem that hits like a bullet right between the eyes! VERY well penned; brava! And thank YOU, Karla, for serving! Welcome home, soldier, welcome home! (That goes the same for Georg! Semper Fi!)
(((HUGS))) and much love, your twin, Karen Lynn. :( >tears! <
I will NEVER forget the sacrifices made by you and all veterans! :)
Karla (and George) I'm so glad George asked you to write this Karla, for I think it is exceptional.
I hear the dread and the pain, I hear the many years of a suffering soul and I am glad that I cannot relate.
But - and this is important:
I also hear the honest complaint of being forgotten. To all of you out there who serve or have served, at war or at home: Just because you signed your life to become the government's property and to be used, chewed up, and spit out - and just because the government has not kept their end of the bargain and has indeed forotten about you, there are many people who have not!
Your pain pains me, but your believe of being forgotten hurts my pride and honour I give to you and always will!
Love,
Becca~
