Last Gasp

Poem Artwork

Heat bubbling up from below
catches that emanating
from the sun's surface and bursts
into flame under my feet ---

burning like embers stirred by
my passing, they set the ground
ablaze with one last gasp of
color, these stubborn Autumn

leaves.  Nearly Winter and they
refuse to die quietly:
how they glow.  Perhaps they think
I will not remember them ---

why they ignite like lightning,
showering my eyes with reds
and oranges and yellows:
they make it hard to forget.

Great write Karla as we just pulled through one of the worst wind storms in Nova Scotia. No snow in sight, hope Santa has wheels on his sleigh.

Indeed, they do, although up here, they are now long gone, replaced by howling arctic winds, sub zero wind chills, and snow, snow, snow.
