story of a desert monsoon

An Unwelcome Star

The time has come for me to take the stage
My adoring fans have been waiting for me for such a long time.   They’re either anxious or dreading me. Let the desert concert begin.

First things first, I must turn off that blinding light, hard to do the show if the ambience isn’t right.

The dark curtain now hides the sun.  A little bit of cool wouldn’t hurt this place, having the light gone and just a hint of wind.

People come out of their houses and begin to applaud.
They've  endured the monotony of summer's searing heat, now I’m here to give them relief.

For now I am the star of the show, but I’m a devil in disguise.  They welcome me now, but their memories are short, they forgot all about the wrath I entail.

First, drops of rare water hit the arid ground.  Slowly at first, than I burst like a dam.  The loving fans that adored me; tremble now in fear.  I laugh at them and before they know it; my fury has appeared!

They panic and wonder what I’ll do next.   I fill all their empty river beds and make them overflow.  Floods hit the roads and houses alike.   The roads are all washed away; the world has come to a halt.  Sirens scream along the streets, driving in rain is a forgotten art.    Not but an hour ago, they were worshipping me, thanking me for a rare desert song.  Now they’re booing me, kicking me off the stage.

Okay, I know when I’m not wanted, so I’ll just blow away.  But I’ll be back for my encore, when it will be I cannot tell, it’s really not up to me.  Who am I, you ask?  Why, I'm the famous desert monsoon, be a fan, don't ever forget who I am!

Such a powerful description of the monsoon - either a curse or blessing - right now, would take a bit of one to break the spine of the heat wave we're currently under - dang, hot out there! Well done, Mary.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Hopefully nature won't be so tough in the fall with a monsoon where not wanted. Floods we abide, other devil like things we handle, but monsoons wash away so many lives and seems like we could do without them.
