Restless last night....bad dreams, sleeplessness....this poem is a product of my restless night....guess my muse was right there with me.....

Poem Artwork

Monstrous waves in the blackest of nights,
Tossing their ship onto massive crests,
Before dropping them into bottomless caverns.
Exhausted they clung to whatever they could
Praying that Neptune soon release his deathly grip!
Shattered timbers and broken rails,
Evidence of the brutal assault the storm had unleashed.
Prayers were all they had now,
For the souls of fellow crewmembers already lost,
And for the hope that lives in every human heart!
The unrelenting sea cruelly ravaged their vessel,
As it tortured their weary minds!
And the incessant nightmare continued!
Long into a starless night, the savage wind howled,
Like a thousand banshees hungry for blood!
Neptune’s rage at their struggle to survive,
To deny him his spiteful will,
Turned the vicious winds around once more,
Sending the storm back toward the crippled ship.
Waves like mountains ripped into her hull,
As the men cried out and faced their doom!
When night finally released its grip,
And a glorious sunrise, glimmering on a calm sea
Overtook the last remnants of darkness,
There was not a trace of the ship.
The bodies of the fishermen,
Spoils of war in Neptune’s deep!
His wrath had been appeased,
But the souls of the fisherman were home at last!

Intense and dramatic ~ on nights like this there are just so many hours until morning! By the way, my great grandfather drowned in the sea in Wales, and this poem takes me there ~
Blessings,
Christine

...then you fall asleep once more, only to find yourself back in the same dream.

This is a blast of a poem. Relentless. Yet I can imagine seamen of yore telling such verse over a pint of ale and a tot of rum.

If I didn't already know, this would confirm to me that you are indeed a Newfoundlander for like myself I grew up on stories of the sea and the dangers and the tribulations of the men who called her home.

Annabel, this old dog likes the way you write
and the way you spend your sleepless nights.

Very powerful and lifelike. Neptune seems to be cranky lately. Patrick

As one that has been to sea in winds and rain and waves such as you describe, even in a ship of steel, the foot slipping rolling and deep, shuttering dives into and out of a waves trough are seen and felt within your words.

Gave me goosebumps reading this one Anna! As I read, there is a storm howling outside at this minute and I am thinking how grateful I am to be on a ship right now. Your poem really comes to life in this weather!
Calm sailing to you, David
