Secretary's Day (revised)

April 22 is Administrative Professional's day (formerly known as secretary's day) A typical day.

They don’t say good morning, just line up at my desk.
Would you do this, have you ordered that,  there'sno time
to  rest.   I needed this yesterday, I forgot to say, but
please handle this other thing, I must have it today.

But if they have a problem, they always come along
I don’t know how to do this; can you help me?
If there is a personal problem, I’m a sounding board.
I’ll listen to my “children” no matter what their problems
are.

This is a typical secretary’s day, waiting on my people.
Taking orders or listening to what they have to say.
I really don’t mind, I feel like I’m someone. But if
I have to put up with this, darn it, I want more pay!

There is satisfaction in being "the one" everyone turns to and counts on, even if it is overwhelming sometimes. Happy Administrative Professional's Day!) ~Elizabeth

Although I've been "The Boss" all my life, I hear exactly what you're saying. Secretarys are called Gofurs... Go fur this and go fur that.
Well written poem and you should get more pay.
Thanks,
Dr. Joe

Hell yeah! Send your boss a rate sheet from the local psychologist and tell him/her you'll work for half the rate. OK maybe that's a bad idea. But it was a fun poem. Patrick

I'm a little late in reading this, Mary, but you have described a day in the life of a secretary so well in this!

And you most likely deserve more pay! Excellent write, Mary! I did this work for awhile and know how much it encompasses, and I have the utmost respect for anyone who makes it their career. Bless you!

You are OBVIOUSLY worth your weight in gold, Mary, otherwise you wouldn't be inundated with requests and demands in the ways that you are... A good boss knows how much he relies on his right-hand AP... or PA in the UK (Personal Assistant!) and it is a true shame that not all are able to express it in the ways that Jon below me here does. It seems to me he could set himself up as a Consultant to others on how to do it right... Come out of retirement, Jon!! :)) Keep smiling, Mary, and know that you are doing one helluva job... and doing it WELL!! xx

Mary, my secretary was and remains a very special person to me -- and on Administrative Professional's Day, I never failed to ensure that she received a card, with my very sincere appreciation for her untiring efforts in aiding my endeavors, along with flowers, lunch and a gift certificate -- the host of things she accomplished for me daily were nothing less than exceptional -- daily itinerary, travel arrangements, meeting places and times, scheduling of every description -- letters, memos, report generation, teleconferencing, the list was endless -- my right hand in an ultra-competitive environment where errors were fatal - thanks for reminding me this day to honor her -- I have not seen her in many years now -- time and space separated us at my retirement now more than sixteen years ago -- peace and love my friend --Jon Michael

You forgot to add in the lessons you have to give in how to use the copier, or to remove a paper-jam. Very nice poem.

Write on Mary! Secretaries are "all-around" workers, as all mothers are too. Been a secretary early in life, and it's a hectic stressful job, a lot of work but so little pay. Great poem, style, and rhyme.

I like the way you describe the typical secretary's day -- having been a secretary or administrative assistant I know exactly what you are saying and feeling. And yes -- I like the end -- demand more pay! After all you are part-psychologist - part-analyst and unfortunately, part-mother to all your "children". Susan
