This one's for you, Dad...

Poem Artwork

Spring has come to most of us
and with it
green and leaves,
but this old tree with sturdy trunk
I think is stuck in autumn

He’s made a show of trying
to be a part of spring
with tiny
green leaves sparsely spread
upon his graying limbs

It seems too much an effort
to put forth more than that
to immerse himself completely
in the showiness of spring

Though in younger days his head was full
of spring and
green of things
I think that when my mother died
she took some of the
green

So now he stands there,
arms outstretched and nearly bald
hoping that his rugged charm
will be enough offering this year

I hope he knows that his offering,
although it’s sparse this spring
has been enough throughout the years
to make a monument of him

He’s tired and he’s feeling old
I wonder if he’s dreaming
of embracing spring again--
of
green embracing him…

Your brown and green (very little green) poem is beautiful. You have made it a sad but endearing picture of an aging father. His story is rich and full, but he will never be forgotten or belittled.

Love,
Connie

...balding of its greens locust tree rooted in a metaphor that connect nature's autumn landscape of falling leaves with human ageing process...seem to be slower this spring to re-new...such an uninteresting to the eye look...and there is a human mind...dealing with a grieving process...that needs to embrace the sorrow...pause...grow from the pain...and with courage move forward...with a sense of awareness...believe that everything happens for a reason...so that the "greens" start to grow...again....
Thank you Cryssa, for sharing your beautiful and meaningful verse.

I really empathised with your aging tree...
I hope everyone can still see his innate beauty...
I loved his rugged. Charm...
Great poem Cryssa...

Great personification of a tree still trying to maintain. I have a Japanese oak that is now near death and I had to lop off several of its branches last year giving room for new growth. I have a apricot tree that is always the last to produce leaves in the spring and has never bore fruit, blossoming only once or twice.

I have to help along my sickly tree. Will remove all the dead branches tomorrow, if it comes.
