Nature called my name today
Bird in hand?
Well, not exactly
Bird in the bush?
Not quite
Kookaburra up in the old gum tree?
Nope
I like it when nature surprises me
With color and feathers
And beady watchful eyes
Green surroundings and yes,
Even a 20 foot tall cactus looming
Smack dab in the middle of a grove of trees
Five hundred feet above the shoreline
Where the gentle hiss and crash of waves
Permeate the rustling foliage
Masking the quiet clomp of my sneakers
On the narrow clay trail that leads
To the orchids
Purples and pinks and yellows
Dotting the green tapestry of the forest
Exclamation points for the soothing natural stanzas
Of branch dwellers twittering
In a code I cannot translate
As they skip from tree to tree
Just a pinch out of sight
Always aware of the intruder below
I love it when nature surprises me
Especially when she plays hide and seek

So do I, and nature has so many marvelous surprises, if we only look for them. I encountered my first Trogon while hiking in Arizona's Madera Canyon many years ago - they migrate there from Mexico.
And I was so impressed, it prompted me to write a little children's book about a young bird-watching boy and his loyal old wolf dog, who get lost there, and soon encounter an old ghost who wanders the canyon at night. The book is called 'Mystery of Madera Canyon.'
