First Bird’s Song
By John Herlihy

Do you know
When the first bird sings its song?
Listen and hear
When this bird announces the dawn.

Do you know
When the day has begun?
Listen and hear
When the first song is sung.

Do you know
When the morning has awoken?
Listen and hear
When the first bird has spoken.

Do you know
When the bird chorus follows?
Listen and hear
When melody soothes earth’s sorrows.

Do you know
When the first light shines?
Listen and hear
When the first sound chimes.

Do you know
When the darkness dies?
Listen and hear
When in dying the darkness sighs.

Do you know
When the first song is over?
Listen and see
When the eye sees 4-leaf clover.

The mysteries of the night
Finally give way,
To allow the mysteries of the day
To have their say.

The bird’s first song
Simply arrives out of the blue.
Without this first song
The dawn would never come true .

I really found reward in reading this, as it had such metaphoric meaning as well literal messaging. There is so much to say about the dawn's magic. This is one way to remind us there is much to see and hear as sunrise appears. Thank you for posting.

I love the sounds of morning here by the Mentor Marsh. The tree frogs are still chirping and the birds are singing. What a symphony!! 'Enjoyed this poem a lot!

Love ya!

It's not the first song of the day, but every evening at about 8:45, a cardinal visits our bird feeder, and chirps happily away. It's something I really look forward to hearing each night.

Your words gave me the chills. So sweet and poignant. "Without this first song, the dawn would never come true."

WHEREVER THERE'S A DAWN, AT LEAST 'ONE' BIRD WILL CHIRP TO WELCOME NEW LIGHT. THEY WERE 'PROGRAMMED' TO DO THIS BY THEIR CREATOR...FOR OUR SAKE! BEAUTIFULLY DONE, JOHN, ENJOYED AND THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATION

I agree I believe birds paint the dawn for our ears if we care to listen carefully. Often we don't make the time, often we don't have the time and often we miss it, as I get older I try and appreciate the time I own and can call mine own, the other day I saw a baby squirrel chase after their mamma in my back yard, it made me smile, I love birds too, they are amazing little creatures, Have a good one John, and thank you xo

Do you know
How much you are missed,
When life takes me away
When it demands and insists?

Do you know?
Tell me, do you know?
How much I miss
The beauty within your soul?

We have the birds songs to alert us that dawn has began. Throughout the day there are many other of natures reminders . . .
