-- Perfection in a Shell --

John Herlihy

We listen to the ocean,

Deep inside a living shell.

What of the magic notion,

Its living perfection will tell.

Those endless spirals will run,

Deep down to its central core.

Perfection from mystery spun,

As we knock on nature’s door.

I simply stare at the shell in awe,

God’s perfection never so sublime.

In earnest, never such miracle saw,

To hold in hand as a treasure mine.

The wind may whisper secrets dear,

But the shell itself perfection clear.

In a less poetic sense, shells can be excellent examples of sustainable living. Note the upwardly mobile crab who must forever seek out ever larger shells for its comfortable abode.

I felt like I had the shell next to my ears and was listening to the wonders of the ocean and the world when I read this poem. Great job, John!

SO I WENT AND GOT MY LARGE SHELL...A SOUVENIR GIVEN TO ME BY MY DAUGHTER MANY YEARS AGO. AND I LISTENED TO GOD'S AGELESS SOUNDS OF PERFECTION, SUBLIME. THANKS FOR REMINDING ME, JOHN. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Your words take me to the seashore, John! Different seashells are so unique and interesting to study. "God's perfection" all over the beach! I love it! His perfection sings on so many levels!

Love ya!

Oh, how I miss the distant shores where during my traveling days I would wonder about, carefully stepping over shells both alive and dormant. There truly is a magic to behold in the perfection and the tenacity with which they defend and maintain themselves. Well penned, John.

Your way with words,
can cast a spell.
Beautiful as always,
perfection in a shell.
