-- STARS A-TWINKLING --

John Herlihy

Night stars overhead a-twinkling,

But come to think of it, so what.

Far out there, worlds away, winking,

Without a word to say, not even but.

They just seem to be reaching down,

As if they belonged to me, as mine.

Why then does my face wear a frown,

While there in my heart, I simply pine.

Those twinkling stars not even stars,

In a cozy nook billions of miles away.

They could be just fireflies in glass jars,

In the hands of sweet cherubs at play.

It’s the light we see, they may not exist,

Yet another illusion that tempts us more.

Why then does this fantasy still persist,

In the far reaches of the universal shore?

Ah, all those distant stars, where and when,

Moving away from what they once had been.

WHETHER WE ADORE THEM OR NOT...STARS PROVOKE A REMARK FROM US. AND WHETHER IT'S A POSITIVE REMARK OR NOT IT DOESN'T MATTER. THEY ARE MANDATED TO REMAIN THERE TO GET OUR ATTENTION...A-TWINKLING. WELL DONE, JOHN. LOVE, BLESSINGS & FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

I love to look up at the stars. As with this poem, sometimes it makes me feel pensive. Perhaps because therein lies my true home? But mostly I just marvel at the vast beauty and perfection of the cosmos. It awes me to think that one day, while my spirit may soar to other realms, my body will return to its true form as a part of the essence of the universe.

Interesting to read this today as I spent a couple of hours researching the Singularity and the idea that only infinity can bring two parallel lines together. Those twinkling stars remind me once again how small we are in the universe. Beautifully rendered.

Beautiful as always. Maybe those stars are just a twinkle in someone's eyes.

Your words in this poem reach around the reader and embrace her/him, John! "It’s the light we see, they may not exist,
Yet another illusion that tempts us more."

Yes, sometimes we chase what in reality does not exist. We chase the dream, perhaps. Beautifully written!
