I will. I do. Today and every day. Got your back. Thank you ...

Why not me, a little boy playing
at the game of war? Like a
thousand times before, I got up:
if I didn't like the way I died or
was wounded, there was always
a do-over, right?
Why not me, finding myself
hurting and dying for real, lying
on a broken field that isn't
nearly as red as me? No fear?
Tell me that as I call out to
Mommy to stop the pain.
Why not me, resting in the arms
of medics as they battle to save
my life? Hopefully, there will be
something left to save. Won't
know until I wake up, that is, if
I wake up --- Mommy ---
Why not me, as I lie in a flag-
draped coffin, coming home for
the final salute, seeing the tears
on the faces of those I love? War
sucks. Why not me? I did it so
it wouldn't have to be you.
Karla, an excellent point of view from a soldier who gave his life for his fellow countrymen. We often don't see or realize that soldiers are people just like us with real human faces and real human lifes and yes, they do question. Thank you for reminding us of the humanity of a soldier! Great write.
