Backpacking the Wild

Single file
one by one
I watch
from atop
this slab of rock
passing by, silently
up………….this winding trail
a trial of suffering
pausing……………..

To lean over, to lighten
 the load
relieve the burden
on their bent backs

Stepping, that slow
methodical
drumming of the feet
the ancient cadence
of step

Pausing……….for
breath
smirking at death
moving upward……….
and so , ……..I to
pause.....................

to watch, to reflect
in this place
of wind and rocks and trees
so far away
yet, where ......I    seem
 to belong
with these ones
of ancient ,steps
in this barren, wild landscape
into this wilderness of the
wilds ,of the heart

Climbing seems a lot of fun. I can't do that because of my legs, but to be among nature is a great thrill. Beautifully written. Great picture.

Crisp an encouraging, and there's a wide open breathe-the-world-in feel to it. The picture looks for all the world like some Alaskan pics I've seen... frigid-cold, and that grass must look very inviting to a mountain goat, if it's not at Salt-lick. --Charlie

pausing for breath, smirking at death. .. .chilling, reflective, assuaging, metaphorical moment. .. and the ending---> yes, the heart is a much wilder[ness] and overgrown dire place than any landscape. .. . i should be in your pocket tho.

I'm not a backpacker or climber, Stan, but you took
me with you on this one. And I like it. Thanks. -gene.

Sounds truly marvelous to me, my friend, and I think that's where I belong, too. I wish I were somewhere just like that, right now.

Happy Trails To You!
