A desert winter

Poem Artwork

Barren trees and snow of white
Caressing a frozen ground
Howling wind, long starless nights
People sigh a melancholy sound
Will it ever end? It seems so long.
A cloudy, dreary winter brings everyone down

But not so very far away, the desert sings another song
The cactus wrens sitting on branches high
Sing their sweet and pleasing melody
The chimes sway as the mild wind blows
Together they play in perfect harmony
Upon the land, the animals play
On the warm and pleasing sunny day.
Together with azure cloudless skies
No coats to wear, or hats to bear just the
Soothing warmth of the sun so high
And when evening falls, a billion stars will
Come out and blanket the vast desert sky.

Such a nice way to compare winters from the east to the desert southwest. I'm originally from the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. After living at the Mexican border in Arizona and now Texas, our appreciation for the mild winters is something we never expected. Great poem and insight!

You've painted a beautiful picture of the desert and its sky. Beautiful thoughts especially at this time of year when the forscythia is starting to bloom it's golden blossoms in comparison to the grey of the spring rain. Susan

I've never seen a desert, as I've lived my days near the ocean, but with this description I have come a little closer to knowing to a small degree what a desert is like...Ed

I've never been able to write poetic passages about "things" or "places", as much as I would like to. I admire your ability to evoke an emotional response writing about a place or area. Very well crafted.

I like how you set up the poem with the first stanza and answer with the second - and it sounds so inviting. I've never experienced a desert winter, but in FL the sun is so strong even after a cold night. The difference: after the freezes we've had (3!) everything's brown, ugly.
And I was just thinking while passing your Bio picture - you're always under a lovely green tree and it looks nice outside -
Happy Holidays, you've the best of it! michael

Mary,
I like the contrast between both locations. You capture how we often wish we were somewhere warm when it's cold. Unique descriptions. The desolate feel of winter is vivid in the first verse. Hugs:)

Love the contrasts you have wrought here, Mary, with the "short freeze" of the first stanza as compared to the flowing and melodic second. Thank you... I would not have pictured so much life in my imaginings of the desert-scape. Kate xx

Beautiful.
A cloudy dreary winter brings everybody down? Not me today. Thanks for introducing yourself. You have brought some sunshine into my world today.

You know, this poem makes me wish I lived in the desert instead of in PA. It sure has been cold here so far this year.
This is great--the first verse is so very expressive of the feelings winter can evoke; the rest beautifully described.

Mary, I took your advice and read this beautiful poem. You really have done well in contrasting the different winters. I, too, have experienced both, having moved from Washington D.C. to California. Believe me, I don't miss those east coast winters, but all situations contain beauty in the eyes of poets--we who look for the silver lining. Thanks for your comments on Mister Winter.
