Write It Down!
I was raking the yard the other day, when inspiration struck! A real knock on the noggin! I stopped raking for a minute, and anyone watching would have seen a great smile come across my face; Did she find a treasure among the broken branch bits and dead grass? No – that can’t be – She’s not stopping to pick it up; Perhaps she was just experiencing a moment of relief after an indelicate momentary ‘break’. They would have been right on two counts, at least – one: I had found a treasure, and two: I didn’t stop to pick it up! I had broken my first and most important rule as a writer: Write it down! I had neglected to put my essential little pad of paper and pen in my pocket. By the time I realized my neglect, that wonderful treasure, that golden bit of inspiration was gone! No matter what method of recall I tried, I could not get it back. To this moment, I cannot remember the exact phrasing that had occurred to me; it might have been the trigger for what I hoped would be a wonderful essay - one that might have inspired people to re-think the way they talk about their town, village, city or environment. Every town has its unique special features, but the welcome of its people is what makes a visit truly memorable. I remember thinking that attitude is such a big part of what makes a person, group, or town attractive; Each positive life is built, bit by bit, by noticing and storing up tiny moments of warmth, charm, and humour, and by sharing one’s ‘knocks on the noggin’. If anyone was standing nearby me that morning and picked up that bit of treasure – please share it, and please, please – write it down!
