Leaving Melancholy

At this time of year, that old melancholy spirit can really set in. Time to bring the wonder of Christmas forward to take its rightful place in building our New Year.
The Melancholy Road
We're into the month of melancholy - at least for me. I tend to slide right into it after the wonderful hype of Christmas, slipping along (or trying not to!) on ice and snow, grey days and cold temperatures. I used to greet those elements as picturesque, sparkling obstacle courses that welcomed and challenged me to don my cross-country skis or warm boots and clothes; They have now become threatening cracks in the road.
What to do? I grab my beckoning walking poles and don my common sense wardrobe: warm boots with good grip, warm hooded coat and of course my very very warm hand-crocheted 'can stand up all by itself' toque! That cold is only an obstacle if I give it permission to be one.
As I open the door and step out, I take a deep breath and I thank God that I can still do that, and that there is so much beauty laying around me in each snowflake, tree branch, and ice covered weed sparkling in the sun. Then step by step, I move forward; I enter my heart's chapel and offer there a prayer for each person in my life with whom I have shared love.
My walk has become much more than just an exercise, and with no room left in my heart for it, that melancholy spirit has left the scene;
The Melancholy Road
There’s a road called ‘Melancholy’,
I know it well,
I do:
It starts at poor, poor me,
And ends in
Boo hoo hoo!
It’s full of nasty potholes,
It’s quicksand with
A view;
If you stay on Melancholy,
It will keep you
Feeling blue.
To exit melancholy
Is not that hard
To do,
Just take the path called sharing,
That runs from
Me to you!
