With St. Patrick's Day coming up, Here are some thoughts on Irish traditions and the gifts of blarney and eloquence!
Sure and Begorrah - That's The Spirit!
St. Patrick's Day is coming up - a celebration of the music, humour, and all things Irish, and for those who have actually visited the Emerald Isle, there is the Irish tradition of 'kissing of the blarney stone':
According to legend, and Wikipedia, kissing the stone is said to "endow the kisser with the gift of the gab (great eloquence or skill at flattery)".
The image of George Bailey kissing the top of his staircase newel post suddenly popped into my head - the topper that kept coming off in his hand every time he climbed the stairs. Yes, I'm segueing back to Christmas, and my favourite movie: "It's A Wonderful Life". The message in that movie is so simple and so positive that it has the power to continue impacting our lives, long after Christmas, and that is indeed wonderful!
George's 'topper', worn to brokenness as the result of supporting so many hands, became a symbol of all of the little things in his life that he had not recognized as supports and blessings until his wake-up call, compliments of his guardian angel, that jovial spirit - Clarence. It was a wonderful epiphany moment and there was certainly an unspoken eloquence in his gesture.
I have experienced many down moments, as we all do, when nothing seems to be going right in life, and when despite my best intentions, I end up accomplishing very little. There are moments when I feel as though no matter where I actually am, I should be somewhere else, doing something else. Does that ring a bell? Perhaps we need to look around us and recognize that newel post toppers and blarney stones can come in unexpected forms. We all have the power to wax eloquent in word or deed when we give our hearts the microphone.
Suddenly, thoughts of all of the wonderful people who have impacted my life have come pouring into my head, and like George Bailey, I'm feeling very much like one of the richest people in the world.
